Trillian
Pro - Without doubt
the most feature rich instant messenger available
for Windows. Winner of countless group reviews, and
for good reason. Trillian manages all of your contacts
on ICQ,
AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber and Apple Rendezvous
all in a single contact list, so you
can see at a glance who is online and whether they're
available. Furthermore, if a
contact is on more than one network (eg both AIM
and
ICQ) then you can use the "meta-contact" feature
to ensure that this contact only appears once on
your contact list - very neat. Obviously you have
the usual
advantages of a merged contact list such as having
a consistent interface regardless if your contact
is
on ICQ or
AIM for example,
plus the ability to set your status globally (eg
to Away, Busy etc.) with a single click or keyboard
shortcut. Finally, Trillian is highly configurable
and extendable with countless skins and plugins.
The Pro version is a bargain for UK users with the
current
UK/US exchange
rate -

converts to little over £13, which includes
one year of software updates.

Mailsnare -
Excellent email service provider, with advanced server-side
spam/custom filtering, support for both IMAP and POP,
and also has a rich web
interface called Visual Office. It's far better than Yahoo
Mail, Hotmail, or your ISP provider's POP/webmail server,
and
only for £10 to £12
per year - a bargain. Mailsnare works very well
with the freely available Mozilla
Thunderbird email client, and IMAP's
IDLE feature (which is supported by both Thunderbird and
Mailsnare) means emails generally turn up in your inbox
within
5 seconds of
the sender hitting the "Send" button! All your
emails are stored on Mailsnare's IMAP server, which means
you can
access all your email (including archives) from multiple
mail clients or via the web, where ever you happen to be
at the time.

Mozilla
Firefox - The best, most flexible and most secure
web browser currently
available. Unlike Internet Explorer it supports
all the modern browser features such as tabbed browsing, google

excellent companion to the Mozilla
Thunderbird email client, and like Thunderbird it's freely

iTunes - Without doubt the best digital music
jukebox out there. It has a refreshingly clean user interface
and does
everything you could ask with minimal fuss - the advanced
playlist management is particularly powerful. Needless to
say it works great with the Apple
iPod and automatically synchronises your songs and playlists
whenever you plug your iPod into the firewire (or USB)
port. And thankfully iTunes is now available for PC users
too (all hail Apple!). A free download so grab it before
